S came to New Orleans with her significant other to attend a family funeral, expecting only a short stay. At first, they stayed with a friend, but the arrangement quickly fell apart, and they were asked to leave. With no income and no way to pay for gas back to their city, they ended up sleeping in their car.
It wasn’t just uncomfortable, it was unsafe. Her significant other refused to stay in a shelter, and during this time, his behavior turned abusive. Far from home, with few resources and nowhere safe to go, S felt trapped.
She often came to Meals with Love, our breakfast program, where she eventually learned about our Going Home program.
After speaking with her and hearing her story, we began working quietly and quickly, knowing her safety was the top priority. We reached out to several contacts, searching for a way to get her home. Each lead fell through, and for a moment, it seemed like there was no way forward. Then S made a brave decision and she called her mom.
The moment her mother answered, she welcomed S home with open arms, her voice full of excitement. She told S she wanted her to come back, to spend time together, and wanted S to get to know her grandchildren. That phone call changed everything.
S returned home and is now living in a safe, supportive environment surrounded by family. She’s doing well and actively seeking work, focusing on becoming self-sufficient, and, most importantly, reclaiming her sense of stability and hope.
